A comprehensive exam is more than just a couple x-rays and a quick look at the teeth. Our office believes that the best way to treat dental disease, is to prevent it before it starts. A comprehensive exam is the first step in this process to find out what is healthy and what is not by thoroughly evaluating all aspects of your oral and overall health. This is a service we provide for all new patients and our patients of record every 3-5 years. This examination process is considered the current Standard of Care with the American Dental Association.
The comprehensive exam consists of six areas of your oral health:
- Head and neck oral cancer examination
- Temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) evaluation
- Evaluation of your occlusion (how your upper and lower teeth relate to each other when you bite down)
- Periodontal evaluation of the bone and tissue (gums) supporting the teeth
- Evaluation of any current dental restorations, and detection of any new decay or fractured teeth
- Aesthetic evaluation of your smile
Several diagnostic aids are involved in a comprehensive exam including dental radiographs, commonly referred to as x-ray films. Radiographs are pictures of the teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to help identify cavities, cancerous or benign masses, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss (periodontal disease) that cannot be seen during a visual examination.
It is our goal to work as a team with each of our patients to achieve optimum health and overall satisfaction. We will take the time to listen to your concerns, needs and wants and develop treatment plan options to fit you as an individual. Don't take your health for granted, make sure to schedule your visit with us today.
